Ever thought of adding your very own search engine plugin to your browser which will give the search results from your own website? OpenSearch is the answer. Developed by Amazon in 2005 and supported only by the next generation browsers like FireFox 2 and Internet Explorer 7, OpenSearch takes the search keywords from your browser and retrieves the data from your website according to the Query Syntax you provide. These search engine plugins are displayed in the Web Search tool of your browser which is normally located at the end of the Navigation Toolbar. Here we can add or remove plugins from the search tool.
The design of OpenSearch consists of an XML file and the Query Syntax. The XML file tells the browser about the Search Engine Plugin available for adding and the Query Syntax fires the query for getting the results from the website. The compatible browsers automatically detect the plugin. If the user wants to add it to the browser then the user has to click on “Add (Search Engine Name) ” in the drop down list of the web search tool. Doing this will add the plugin to your web search tool. You can remove this plugin by clicking on the “Manage Search Engines” option. A favicon image for the plugin can also be added. After adding it to your browser you just have to select it ,type some search keywords and search to get search results from your own website.
